Mere Literary Festival Poetry Competition 2013

Two L6th Rowland girls, Poppy Napier and Mara Fane, have won prizes in the Mere Literary Festival Poetry Competition for children. The competition was open to all school age children in the region and was judged during the summer holidays.

Congratulations to Poppy who won first prize with her poem ‘My Granny’ and to runner up, Mara, who wrote ‘Through That Door’. Both girls will receive prizes and certificates.

Congratulations, too, to Tallulah Collis, whose poem received a commendation from the judges.

 My Granny

She’s a:

Garden keeper,

Fruit eater,
Letter writer,
Neat knitter.

Warm and nice,
Always kind,
Blood donor,
Cool car owner.

Story teller,
Goodnight kisser,
Always talking,
Slow at walking.

Great big teaser,
Very good feeder.

Oh it’s great to see her!

Through that Door

Through that door,
there may be your wildest imaginations
and most inventive dreams.

Through that door,
there may be glittering snowdrifts,
polar bears loping and penguins
sliding and slipping across shimmering ice.

Through that door,
there may be a black haze of nothing
with a white pinprick of sunlight at the end that never grows.

Through that door,
there may be lush forests with phoenixes,
unicorns and mythical creatures,
happy and carefree.

Through that door,
wherever it may take you ,
you can always be free.
